If Energy Future Holdings Energy Future Holdings files for bankruptcy, a buying opportunity may arise in the iShares iBoxx High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYG). This would be strictly a short-term trade, appropriate only for aggressive risk-takers, given that high yield bonds are currently overvalued on fundamental grounds.
On March 13, Bloomberg reported that privately held Energy Future was close to obtaining commitments from lenders for approximately $7.2 billion of loans, as part of a plan to achieve a swift reorganization in bankruptcy. This news suggests that the Dallas-based company is close to filing under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code.
If Energy Future does seek protection under the Code, it will be an anticlimax. Way back in August 2009, Moody Investors Service downgraded the company to Caa3, a rating that implies a greater than 25% probability of default within one year. (In 2010 Moody withdrew its rating altogether.)
Market Impact
Like the rating agencies, the market has long perceived a high risk of default in Energy Future bonds, which trade under the ticker TXU. The TXU bonds in the BofA Merrill Lynch U.S. High Yield Index currently trade at an average price of $56. By comparison, last year defaulting bonds were quoted at an average price of $54 shortly after default, according to Edward Altman of New York University.

Where growth will come from
One area that Newell Rubbermaid still has to tap fully is emerging markets. The company has done a good job of expanding overseas, with 17% annual growth in Latin America. But with barely a quarter of its sales coming from outside the U.S. and Canada, the company has a lot further to go. Storage rival Tupperware (NYSE: TUP ) gets fully 60% of its total revenue from emerging markets, and it too has seen impressive gains in South America as well as the Asia-Pacific region.

Dow losers
Shares of Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) are down 1.8% following the announcement that the company's union members in South Milwaukee rejected a deal that would freeze wages for six years but provide job security. The proposed plan was to cap the number of layoff weeks to 14 per year and reduce or eliminate indefinite layoffs caused by declining sales in mining equipment. The rejection is not something shareholders want to see, because the plan would have allowed Caterpillar to better control costs over the six-year contract period. - [By Matt Thalman]
Another big loser was Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) , which lost 0.76% of its value today. One reason shares may have moved lower was the report that the U.S. trade deficit widened more than expected in May. Economists had expected the deficit to hit $40.1 billion, but it came in much higher at $45 billion. The report indicated that exports decayed, which reflects slow or stagnant growth in major markets such as China and Europe. While Caterpillar does derive a large portion of its revenue from the U.S., the company needs other economies to be performing well, or it will suffer.

Dollar Tree (DLTR) said Monday it is buying rival discounter Family Dollar (FDO) for $8.5 billion, significantly broadening its reach as it looks to fend off Walmart, which has been stepping up its courtship of lower-income customers The deal makes Dollar Tree the biggest player in the dollar store segment, with its more than 13,000 combined locations eclipsing current leader Dollar General (DG), which has about 11,300. Dollar stores grew during the recession as people across income groups searched for cheaper options. To attract a broader array of customers, they also expanded their offerings to include more groceries and brand-name products, instead of just the party favors and other knickknacks people often associated with them. More recently, however, sales at dollar stores have been suffering because the lower-income customers who go to them are facing persistent job instability and slow wage growth in the aftermath of the recession. Walmart Stores (WMT) and Kroger (KR) also have been opening smaller store formats to directly compete with dollar stores. During its current fiscal year, Walmart plans to open 270 to 300 smaller outlets designed to cater to shoppers looking for more convenience. Brian Sozzi, CEO and chief equities strategist at Belus Capital Advisors, said because the Dollar Tree deal will allow the company to lower expenses by merging its operations, it will ultimately be able to lower prices to better compete with Walmart. "Now they're going to take the fight back to Walmart," Sozzi said. The deal also gives Dollar Tree more flexibility. Dollar Tree is true to its name, with everything in its stores costing just a buck. The fixed pricing has helped attract more customer

Retail Stocks to Watch No. 4: Family Dollar Stores Inc. (Nasdaq: FDO)
One-year retail sales growth: 11.4%
Total 2013 U.S. sales: $10.4 billion
The poor economy has been good to Family Dollar, which has gained customers seeking the lowest possible prices. To accommodate such demand, FDO added 1,000 new items, many of them groceries. It also added 506 new stores to bring its total to 7,916. Although it has agreed to sell itself to Dollar Tree Inc. (Nasdaq: DLTR) for $8.5 billion, Dollar General Corp. (NYSE: DG) keeps making new offers. FDO is up 36.8% over the past three months as a result. FDO closed at $80.22. - [By Jacob Roche]
With the economy starting to improve, you might think Dollar Tree's (NASDAQ: DLTR ) fortunes will reverse. The deep discounter provided unemployed and lower-income consumers a safe place in the storm, but with the economic weather clearing up, it would be reasonable to expect consumers to venture out again to higher-end retailers. However, that assumption would be wrong.
