Comic book summer isn't over yet. This weekend brings The Wolverine, 21st Century Fox's (NASDAQ: FOX ) sequel to 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine. What can fans and investors expect? A return to relevance for the X-Men franchise, I think.

Google says the film is the hottest search on the Web as I write this Friday afternoon. More importantly, 68% of critics and 81% of fans who've seen The Wolverine like it, reports Rotten Tomatoes. No one will be surprised if comic book fans come out for the film. But will everyday theatergoers? Competition could get in the way:
Source: Google.
If The Wolverine doesn't perform as well as Fox would hope -- unlikely, but anything is possible -- it may be because audiences don't know exactly how to package the film, which is set in Japan and comes off more as a moody martial arts epic than a superhero flick.

6. Texas
Texas imposes taxes on the poor equal to 12.6% of their income, compared with just 3.2% in tax on its wealthiest taxpayers. Like many of the states on this list, Texas doesn't have an income tax, relying instead on more regressive sales taxes of 6.25% statewide, with an average of 1.89% added on for local taxes. Oil revenue does play a major role in funding state government, with Occidental Petroleum (NYSE: OXY ) and EOG Resources (NYSE: EOG ) far outpacing their peers in total oil production during 2012. But that doesn't keep the state from ranking in the top 30% of states for sales-tax collections, hitting the poor especially hard. - [By Matt DiLallo]
EOG Resources (NYSE: EOG )
Last year natural gas wasn't kind to EOG he company recorded a $849.4 million impairment charge in the fourth quarter on certain of its Canadian natural gas assets. On top of that, according to the company, "total company net proved undeveloped reserves decreased 15% year-over-year due to low natural gas prices in 2012 that caused essentially all of the previously booked proved undeveloped reserves in EOG's North American dry gas properties to be written off." While this cost the company $1.27 billion in impairment charges, as these are non-cash charges it didn't affect the company's cash flow. Further, if drilling for gas at these properties proves profitable in the future, the reserves can be added back. - [By Paul Ausick]

Nigeria reformed banking system has provided many foreigners with an attractive means to invest in the fast-growing domestic economy. The banking industry is important, not only because of the rise of microfinance, but because of the move by banks into consumer banking. Until recently, banks were mainly financing large businesses or the government through bond purchases. Following a banking crisis in 2008, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) conducted an audit of the commercial banking sector. All banks that failed the audit had their CEOs replaced. The state-owned Asset Management Corporation (AMCON) was created to purchase non-performing loans and recapitalize the unhealthy banks. A recent review of the country banks by the IMF showed a dramatic increase in profits for the industry in 2012, while the capital adequacy ratio was above the minimum requirement of 10% and non-performing loans were below the mandated threshold of 5%5.

For example, last quarter Renewable Energy Group reported revenue leaped 42% to $458.4 million. Net income had a dramatic turnaround, from a loss of $6.9 million to positive $78.5 million or $2.31 per share, though $42.1 million of that was an IRS tax benefit. Green Plains (GPRE) produces, markets, and distributes ethanol in the U.S. This stock closed up 4.8% at $31.54 in Monday's trading session.
Monday's Volume: 1.54 million
Three-Month Average Volume: 1.03 million
Volume % Change: 50%From a technical perspective, GPRE spiked sharply higher here and broke out above some near-term overhead resistance at $30.94 with above-average volume. This spike higher on Monday is quickly pushing shares of GPRE within range of triggering of triggering another big breakout trade. That trade will hit if GPRE manages to clear Monday's intraday high of $31.89 to its 52-week high of $32.60 with high volume.
Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GPRE as long as it's trending above some near-term support at $30 or above its 50-day at $28.59 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 1.03 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then GPRE will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $35 to $40.

It's a tough time to be a global automaker. While China's car market continues to provide robust business activity for the time being, companies that deal in international markets are facing a number of pressures that make operations an increasingly expensive proposition. There are few vehicle makers facing issues quite like Toyota (TM), which, while currently positioned as the world's largest manufacturer of cars and trucks by some accounts, could be in for some tough times ahead if the global economic environment deteriorates further.
